Butterflies by Renee
The butterfly pieces came about through an unfortunate discovery. We love butterflies, and have some of Australia’s most striking and unique examples flying about our property. They are stunning flitting through the rainforest, but when you have the opportunity to get close, the colours and detail in the patterns, on the upper and undersides of the wing, are truly breathtaking.
The unfortunate discovery was that mounted butterflies from commercial suppliers have an unhappy beginning. The butterflies are typically bred in captivity or captured from the wild, allowed to emerge from the chrysalis and then gassed to provide a perfect in-tact specimen. To me, this is against everything the butterfly symbolises. Therefore, I decided to make my own so we could appreciate their beauty close up and guilt free. Friends soon starting asking for these, and it took off from there.
Each piece is crafted with the highest quality, acid free art materials. I use a range of photographic and reference materials to ensure the features and colours are as accurate to the real thing as possible. We then make all the mounting boxes ourselves to ensure we are happy with the quality, and we know they will last for many years. We also craft the gift boxes individually for each art piece, totally from recycled materials, avoiding creating any additional demand for forest products.
Each butterfly is a one-off unique piece, and hand crafted from start to finish. A single Ulysses Butterfly takes about four to six hours to complete, with another two hours for the display box and gift box.
Each piece when complete is individually numbered and retained in our register. When we do sell items, we love to know where in the world they have gone.
